A Journey of Grace

Bethany is a community of people on a journey together, drawn in by the grace of God. We believe that grace is not something you have to earn or prove yourself worthy of. It is a gift, freely offered to every single person.

We are part of the Church of the Nazarene, a denomination rooted in the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition. That heritage shapes how we read Scripture, how we understand God’s work in our lives, and what we believe is possible for every person who opens their heart to God. At the core of that tradition is a conviction that God’s grace doesn’t just forgive us; it transforms us.

The beliefs below are the foundation of everything we do. They are not a checklist for belonging. They are an invitation to a life that keeps getting deeper.

Our Beliefs

Who God Is

We believe in one eternal God — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is the Creator and Sustainer of everything, holy in his nature and purpose, and the only true God.

We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, eternally one with the Father. He took on human flesh through the Holy Spirit and was born of the Virgin Mary, making him fully God and fully human. He died for our sins, rose bodily from the dead, and now intercedes for us in heaven.

We believe the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, actively present in the Church, convicting people of sin, giving new life to those who repent and believe, sanctifying believers, and guiding them into truth.

We believe the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments were inspired by God and faithfully reveal everything necessary for salvation and Christian living. Scripture is our primary authority for faith and practice.

What God Has Done For Us

We believe all people are born with a fallen nature, inclined toward sin. This inherited condition is not something we chose, but its remedy, provided by God, must be accepted. Personal sin is any willful violation of God’s known law by a morally responsible person.

We believe God’s grace, made available through Jesus Christ, is freely given to all people. This grace enables anyone who is willing to turn from sin, place their faith in Jesus, and live a life pleasing to God. No one can do this by their own strength alone; it is God’s grace that makes it possible.

We believe that God calls all people who have sinned to repent: to sincerely and completely change their mind about sin, acknowledge their guilt before God, and turn away from it. The Holy Spirit gives the help needed to do this. Believers who fall away from God are called to repent and return.

We believe that when a person repents and puts their faith in Jesus Christ, three things happen at once: they are justified (fully forgiven and accepted by God), regenerated (given new spiritual life), and adopted (made a child of God). All of this is received by faith and confirmed by the witness of the Holy Spirit.

We believe that after salvation, the Holy Spirit can do a deeper work in a believer’s heart: a second experience of grace called entire sanctification. In this work, God cleanses the heart from the root of sin, fills the believer with the Holy Spirit, and empowers them to love God and others completely. This experience is also called “heart purity,” “perfect love,” and “the baptism of the Holy Spirit.” It is not the end of growth, but the beginning of maturing into the fullness of Christ’s character.

How We Live It Out

We believe the Church is the community of people who confess Jesus Christ as Lord. God calls the Church to worship, preach the Word, observe the sacraments, and live out the mission of Christ in the world through evangelism, discipleship, compassion, and working for justice.

We believe baptism is a sacrament commanded by Jesus, signifying a person’s acceptance of salvation and their incorporation into the body of Christ. It may be administered by sprinkling, pouring, or immersion. Believing adults as well as the young children of believing parents may be baptized.

We believe Communion is a sacrament instituted by Jesus, proclaiming his life, death, resurrection, and promised return. Christ is present by the Spirit in this meal, and all who have faith in him are invited to participate, receiving renewal and grace.

We believe God heals the sick in direct answer to prayer. We also believe God heals through the work of medical science. We encourage our people to pray in faith for healing and to trust God in both.

We believe Jesus Christ will return in glory and power at the end of the age to fully establish God’s kingdom. The dead will be raised, creation will be renewed, and God will dwell eternally with his redeemed people. All suffering, injustice, and death will be no more.

We believe in the bodily resurrection of all people. Every person will stand before God in final judgment. Those who have believed in and followed Jesus Christ will receive eternal life; those who have died in persistent rejection of God will face eternal separation from him.
